Rants and raves about software art & design, artsy fartsy style.
I get the question all the time "hey I want to get a job in digital art, what's the best software?" I immediately am ready to gleefully and helpfully blurt out the best (imo) answer until it's (inevitably) followed up with the qualifier... "something that isn't Photoshop".
My eagerness to help boils into full-blown rant mode.
Why don't people want to learn Photoshop? I understand, it's paid software, you've already heard that and tried it and threw your arms up in frustration. It's complex looking. It's Adobe. It's not a mobile app. It's boring. It doesn't have a "Prettify" button (ok, that was mean). Yes. It is all of those. But it is also the industry standard for a reason. Let me clarify.
There's more to graphics jobs than painting pretty pictures (friggin sucks). Outside of the fact that you need to illustrate ANYTHING asked of you (I'll save that rant for another day), you also need the technical tools that not many art programs offer. Script use is a common practice at every graphics job I've had. Asset generation, pixel perfect alignment, color profiles, print tools, vector, powerful type tools... anything you can think of will be one day be asked of you in the field and Photoshop almost always has a solution.
There are other cool pieces of software for specific things but they generally come and go and are rarely as powerful. The tend to cost money too. Not gonna lie though, I do use other software for batch conversion/rename because there's some real gems out there...few that aren't done via command line *barf*. I've dabbled with other painting programs but always come back to Photoshop because most of the others don't offer enough (different or otherwise) to make the switch.
Here's the thing... if learning Photoshop is too much to ask and you can't be bothered with it, well you probably aren't that interested. Or, you legitimately just really hate Photoshop and I have no idea what I'm talking about because this article is complete rubbish. I'm betting on the latter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
