Update: Apparently Nintendo claims BS and recently stated that the reports of the Wii U console going out of production were untrue. It's hard to know for sure as many companies will save face to maximize existing sales, and Nintendo is no exception. In 2012, they denied rumors about new models of the 3DS, which turned out true. Earlier this year Tatsumi Kimishima also officially stated " Nintendo would “greatly reduce the amount of Wii U systems produced and shipped.” I'm inclined to believe that production is definitely ramping down considering their new console on the horizon, and Nintendo is likely denying the rumors as to not damage existing sales.
According to multiple sources via Eurogamer, Nintendo's Wii U is going out of production. Sales were never very strong, and this contrast is even more highlighted when compared to the Wii's 100 million in sales to the Wii U's dismal 13 million.
Our time with the Wii U was short-lived, but definitely a fun one. I personally found Mario 3D World one of the best Mario games in recent years, possibly the best since Mario 64. The console saw many heavy hitters like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. Sadly, it never graced us with the release of a new Metroid game. Many players, including myself, have been clamoring for a new entry into the Prime series ever since the awful Other M released on the original Wii.
Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima reported earlier in the year during a shareholder meeting that the name caused confusion with the previous Wii console, contributing to the Wii U's inability to gain traction with it's audience.
Nintendo announced it's successor to the Wii U earlier this month. Give us fucking Metroid Prime 4.
