While we are building our house, we are living in a temp space and my go-to gaming rig is an Alienware Alpha (cool little machine btw). Upon hooking it all up, I saw I had Aliens Colonial Marines already installed and ready to play. Aliens is probably my favorite sci-fi franchise of all time. I've spent countless hours debating on forums about things like if Bishop in Alien 3 is an android or not. But, I digress.
I originally played through A:CM co-op on the PS3 and remember not hating it. I admit I was pounding down beers the whole time; also co-op makes everything fun, but hey... I decided to give it a go for ole time's sake. It couldn't be that bad, right?
Well, at first it actually wasn't that bad. The music was right, the tone was right, they even had a cool film grain effect going on. The controls felt good. It got a little bro-y pretty quickly, but I didn't mind that too much. I feel like the beginning of the game was actually made with some passion.
Things started to fall apart rapidly a few hours in. The Powerloader scene was a massive let down. I died like 5 times because the dumb thing seemed to have no effect on the PredAlien monstrosity I was fighting, despite my massive metal arm-thingys! I finally got past it and hoped I'd be moving on to something better. Nope, now I'm fighting silly AI human soldiers for some reason (my eyes glazed over during the cliche dialog). I got to the climax fighting soldiers in some hangar while trying to activate switches. The whole thing just felt like a numb uninspired design. I didn't care at all about anything, just running around like Rambo while bullets fly everywhere.
The final nail in the coffin were the lame sleeping xenomorphs that have, what looks like, fart smell particle effects emanating from them. These things look as though they are sleeping in the sewer or something, and your annoying racket seemingly makes them cranky assholes. Killing them involved turning on steam vents that they all sheepily run towards and pop with an explosion that looks like it's from Quake 2. They made up an alien creature for the game that sneaks around and comes after you....THAT'S WHAT THE ORIGINAL XENOMORPHS DO. Why make these new ones with stinky yellow particle effects and a silly walk?
Oh, not to mention all the bugs.
Enough was enough. I (virtually) shelved that one until the next time I fall for nostalgia. I turned around and ranted to Mandy, as if she already didn't know (she originally played co-op with me the first time).
Oh yeah, then came Alien Isolation. I cried...because I couldn't play it...because it was too good and I was too damn scared. Man I'm hard to please.
